Start Rx-Writer on iPad

Finding Rx-Writer on your iPad
To get started using Rx-Writer, launch the application by tapping the Rx-Writer icon wherever you may have installed it. Finding the Rx-Writer application icon may be somewhat challenging because the iPad operating system seems to install new applications somewhat randomly. You may have to look through all of your application pages for the blue Rx icon. We suggest that you touch and hold the icon until all icons begin to shake then drag the icon to application bar on the bottom of the screen so it will always be easy for you to find. Once the Rx-Writer is where you want, press the home button below the iPad's screen on the front surface of the iPad to stop shaking icons and return to normal mode.

Your Signature

stacks_image_5F6BE54A-FCF0-48E6-835C-C0CA059F3331
We have created a way to capture your signature within Rx-Writer placing your signature on every faxed and emailed prescription. Use your finger to write your name inside the box. You may want to select clear until you are happy with your signature. I find it easier to turn my iPad horizontally when entering my signature.

After you are satisfied with your signature, press save in the upper right portion of your screen. You will then be back to Account Creation to complete the process. If you ever need to modify your signature or any any account information, you may do so in Rx-Writer Preferences.

Patient List

Patient List Help
The Patient List is one of three screens you will use regularly in Rx-Writer. At the top of the screen there is a title bar Patient List in the center of the screen with your Practice information centered below. The Preferences button in the upper left of this screen will take you to Preferences. You may edit any of the information entered during New Account Creation. Additional preference setting will be found in Preferences and will be discussed below.

Following Account Creation you will see a blank/empty Patient List. You may add patients quickly in Rx-Writer or you may prefer to have your staff enter either all of your patients or, more likely, your patients for the following day.

In the upper right corner of the Patient List, the Pt+ button will allow you or your staff to add patients. Most states require a state specific set of minimum patient information. Patient information required by most states appear in
red.

When patient information has been entered, tap the Save button. You will now be able to add multiple prescriptions for the patient you entered or you may return to Add Patient and add several patients at once.

Once the patient information is saved you are taken to the Med List for the last patient entered. When looking at the Med List of a new patient, the list will be black. After you have entered prescriptions for a specific patient, Med List will show either the current Med List or the history of all medications prescribed, including discontinued medications.

Med List

Med List Help
The Med List is where you will spend most of your time using Rx-Writer. It is where Rx-Writer will dramatically increase your productivity. To the left is an established patient with multiple comorbidities. With established patients such as Mr. Ford, you will see the current Med List, the history of all medications you have prescribed for Mr. Graham, select medications to renew and rapidly send prescriptions to both the pharmacy and/or to your office. When you need to modify a preexisting prescription, tap the name of the medication to edit the prescription much faster than reentering or writing a new prescription.

There is a great deal of clinically valuable information on the Med List. From the Med List you may enter new prescriptions for the patient, modify existing prescription, and renew existing prescriptions.

At the top of the screen is the Title Bar. Below the title "Med List" is the patient's name and DOB. In the upper left corner or the Med List are two buttons for returning to the "Patient List" or creating a "Note" that will be saved with patient's medication data... a convenient location to store prescription information such as why a medication was modified or discontinued. In the upper right corner is the Rx+ button which opens a blank prescription pre-populated with patients demographic information.

You may tap any prescription name to edit/modify that prescription. In the Med List to the left are two prescriptions for Lipitor. One created on 8/3/2010 for 10 MG QD and same prescription modified 9/5/2010 for Lipitor 20MG QD. To increase Lipitor dose to 40MG QD, touch one of the Lipitor prescriptions to easily modify the dose. Rx-Writer will automatically update the prescription date.

Notice 3 columns to the left of medication names: Pharmacy, Office, and D/C. To transmit a prescription to a pharmacy tap the check button to the left turning the button green, signaling it is ready to be transmitted to the designated pharmacy that appears to the right of the medication name. To print a copy in your office to give to your patient or enter in the chart, just tap the check button under the column titled Office, turning it purple. If you want to renew all, tap Pharmacy in the column heading and to toggle the entire column on or off. Renewals will be fast.

Pharmacy Popover Help
You may choose to associate each prescription with a different pharmacy as may be required by specific patients. Add, Edit, Delete, and Manage Pharmacies with the "Manage Pharmacies" button in the lower left corner. "Manage Pharmacy" button opens "Manage Pharmacies Pop Over." The top of this Pop Over is a search box. Over time, your pharmacy list may become very long. At any time, you may tap the search box and start typing the pharmacy name. All Lists in Rx-Writer are auto filtering searchable lists. As you type the first few letters of the pharmacy the list will show only the pharmacies matching the letters typed.

The Blue Circle with the greater than symbol within is called a Detail Disclosure Button. Whenever you see a Detail Disclosure Button, tap it to see additional information about that item, in this case Pharmacy Edit.
Pharmacy Edit Help
You may edit any of the pharmacies' information.

Rx-Writer needs only the name, fax number, and/or email email address for each specific pharmacy. The remaining information is optional. The section at the bottom of the edit pharmacy popover is titled Submit Prescriptions where you may select whether to transmit to each specific pharmacy via fax, via email, or both.
Med List Help 2
From Med List you will may choose to see the patient's entire prescription history that has been entered into Rx-Writer by selecting "All" in the upper right corner. At the bottom center is the selection button for Dx (Indication), Alpha (Alphabetically), or Chrono (Chronological). You may choose to view all medications or current medications by Indiction (Dx), Chronologically, or Alphabetically. Compare this Med List to searching through a paper chart to see what medications were prescribed, when they were prescribed, and for which indication.

When entering a new prescription for Lipitor, start to type "Lip" and the medication list automatically searches and shortens the selection list. When Lipitor is visible, touch Lipitor and it is entered into the Rx Field. Rx-Writer will remember your selected medications in a recents list that appears at the top of the medication list the next time you write a prescription. Rx-Writer automatically advances to the Dosage field with only the dosages that are FDA approved displayed in Medication Dose List. Select the appropriate dosage for your prescription. To prescribe a dosage that does not appear in the dose list (off label), enter new dosage value into the search field and press Add.

Rx Dx Popover Help
In addition to the traditional prescription data fields, allow you to enter one or more Indications. Indications print on prescriptions. When Indications are entered, Rx-Writer is able to track medications by Indication, creating the Problem List. Currently, Indications print on all prescriptions, dramatically reducing the number of phone call from pharmacies to you office. The next version of Rx-Writer will offer you the option to choose not to print specific indications on prescriptions. Currently, you may enter a prescription without confidential indications, submit prescription to pharmacy or local printer, and then add the indication. Furthermore, you may choose to enter a new Indication using a code or code word. Future versions will offer the option to not print Indications on Rxs and the offer to print only ICD-9 codes and/or ICD-10 codes.

After you have entered one or more indications, please review the default setting for refills (4), and generic substitution (yes), and start date (current date), and make changes as needed. Your DEA# and/or ME# will be entered automatically if you have entered if you have entered one or both during the registration process. DEA# and ME# may be added, deleted, or modified at any time in the Subscriber Preferences within Rx-Writer.

You may associate each prescription with a different pharmacy if you have already added pharmacies. New pharmacies may be added from the Med List or from the Patient Edit form.
